The Death of Media Trust — And Who's Filling the Void

The numbers don't lie, even when the networks do.

Gallup's annual media trust survey has become one of the most predictable stories in American journalism — not because the results change, but because they don't. Year after year, trust in mass media hits a new floor. As of 2026, fewer than one in three Americans say they trust the media to report the news "fully, accurately, and fairly." Among Republicans and independents, that number is even lower.

This isn't a blip. It's a collapse. And it didn't happen by accident.

How We Got Here

For decades, the major networks and newspapers operated on a simple social contract: we report, you trust. That contract held — imperfectly, but it held — because Americans had limited alternatives. If you wanted news, you watched the evening broadcast or read the morning paper. The gatekeepers controlled the gate.

Then came the internet. Then came social media. Then came the ability for ordinary Americans to fact-check, cross-reference, and compare what they were being told against what they could see with their own eyes.

The result was devastating for legacy media — not because independent voices were louder, but because they were right more often than the institutions that were supposed to be authoritative.

The Iraq WMD narrative. The Russia collusion story. The lab leak dismissal. The Hunter Biden laptop suppression. Each of these wasn't just a journalistic failure — it was a betrayal. And Americans noticed.

The Bias Isn't the Problem. The Denial Is.

Here's what I tell my listeners on Unleashed Media & Talk: I'm not objective, and I don't pretend to be. I have a perspective. I believe in limited government, individual liberty, and the American founding. I say so openly.

That's not a flaw. That's honesty.

The mainstream media's fatal mistake wasn't developing a left-leaning perspective — every journalist has a worldview. Their mistake was insisting they didn't have one while acting on it constantly. The bias wasn't the problem. The denial was.

When a network anchor tells you he's giving you "just the facts" while selectively choosing which facts to present, which stories to cover, and which voices to amplify — that's not journalism. That's propaganda with better production values.

The Rise of Independent Conservative Media

Into that vacuum stepped a generation of independent voices: podcasters, talk radio hosts, YouTube commentators, Substack writers. People who were willing to say what they believed, take the criticism that came with it, and keep showing up anyway.

This isn't a fringe movement. Conservative podcasts dominate the Apple Podcasts charts. Talk radio — written off as a dying medium a decade ago — is experiencing a renaissance as listeners seek out voices that don't talk down to them.

What these audiences have in common isn't ideology. It's a demand for authenticity. They want hosts who will tell them what they actually think, engage with ideas seriously, and treat them like adults capable of forming their own conclusions.

That's the standard I hold myself to at Unleashed Media & Talk. Not perfection — I get things wrong, and I say so when I do. But honesty. Always honesty.

The Road Ahead

Independent conservative media faces its own challenges. Deplatforming. Demonetization. The constant pressure from tech companies that don't share our values and aren't shy about using their power to suppress voices they disagree with.

But every challenge is also a test of whether what we're building is real. And I believe it is.

The listeners who tune into Unleashed Media & Talk every week aren't there because I'm the only option. They're there because they've decided to trust what I'm doing — and I take that seriously every single time I sit down at the microphone.

That's the only way independent media survives: by earning trust, one episode at a time.
